Zalakaros

The small town of Zalakaros with its 1.500 inhabitants lies in the south-western region of Hungary, 40 km far from the Balaton. There is a small airport in Sármellék in a distance of 15 km. The settlement has been well known in Hungary and abroad for the remarkable medicinal thermal bath discovered in the 60's, which is with its water of 96 °C the warmest spa in Hungary. This thermal water is ideal for curing skin-defections, gum-diseases, curing locomotor disorders, gynaecological problems as well as for rehabilitation purposes.The bath is open throughout the year on a field of 13 hectares with 14 pools of different watertemperature. In the open-air thermal pools modern thermal and spa- water pools of 24, 32, 36 °C offer a pleasant allday bathing for people all of ages. There is also a pool with a wave machine, which operates from June 2002. In the bath the pools are filled with thermal and spa-waters, which come from wells of different watertemperature.
For individual trips, we call your attention to curiosities of the Nature Conservation Area Kis-Balaton, the buffalo reserve in Kápolnapuszta and the bird preserve in Zimány. The more than 1 km long Kányavár Island can be visited free of charge. The castle in Keszthely or a trip by boat on the Lake Balaton can offer you a special experience. In the small town of Nagykanizsa, which lies 20 km far from Zalakaros, many things can be seen (Turkish well, Synagogue, a church in the upper part of the town, Thury György Museum, art galery). In the vineyard of Szentgyörgyhegy fine wines are produced. After a walk around the ruins of a fortress you can be invited by smallholders to their wine-cellars to taste their wine.
