Budapest city center for many tourists means the Váci street area. This pedestrian street is paralel to the Danube and it is divided into 2 parts by the road coming off the Elisabeth bridge: south of the bridge you'll find the older half, north of the bridge you'll find the so called new-Váci street all the way to Vörösmarty square.

The new part of the street is famous for its luxury shops, while the older half offers more restaurants and cafés. Tourists love both, of course. Some people barely move out of this area during their Budapest visit because they can find everything they need here. Lot of souvenir shops are open 7 days a week, and though prices are usually the highest in the city, many people buy there take-home special Hungarian gifts in this area.

Naturally, most tourists try to arrange accommodation in or near the pedestrian zone. The most popular place is Hotel Mercure Budapest City Center (former Hotel Taverna), because this 4 star hotel is the only hotel located directly in the pedestrian street. The hotel has its own restaurant and confectinery, open to the street, inviting non-hotel guests as well. All rooms in the Mercure Budapest City Center have been fully renovated during the spring of 2006. About 150 meters from here, you'll find City Hotel Pilvax in the Pilvax street, which is also a pedestrian street, perpendicular to Váci street. This is a smaller, but more cozy 3 star hotel. It also has its own restaurant, and during the summer, they operate a nice terrace. Seniors should not select this hotel because there is no elevator, and though the personnel always helps if you've got heavy luggage, they won't be able to walk the stairs instead of you. During breakfast in the famous Pilvax Restaurant, you'll be able to take a look at some relics of the 1948 revolution. The young intellectuals, who participated boldly in the initiation of the revolt against the Habsburg supremacy, used to gather in the Pilvax.

In the same building but on the other side, there is a nice little pension on the second floor: Pension Leo. Rooms are nice and spacious, very well equipped. Some rooms face the Kossuth Lajos street coming off the Elisabeth bridge, which is rather noisy, but the windows are soundproof. At the foot of the bridge, right between the old and the new part of Váci street, there is the City Hotel Matyas. A residential building has been transformed into a hotel, some of the apartments remaining private in the building. Reception area is separate, found on the left side once you enter the building and go up the stairs. The rooms are scattered in the building. Beneath the hotel you'll find the famous Mátyás Pince Restaurant, where the breakfast is served. Even if you are not staying at this hotel, it's really worth visiting the restaurant because it's a unique experience. Some rooms in the hotel offer a partial river view, but only on the top floors and really partially. I wouldn't call it river view. If you want river view in this area, take a look at River Apartments. The large apartment is 70 m² in size with two rooms plus facilties, offering a full river panorama at the beginning of the old Váci street on the Danube side.

At the nearby Ferenciek square, ca. 100 meters from Váci street, you'll find the 3 star Hotel Erzsebet, which is open since 1873. This hotel is a member of the Danubius Hotel Group and many tourists like it because of its central location and history. Between the new Váci street and the Deak Ferenc square, two 5 star hotels are located next to one another: Hotel Corvinus Kempinski and Hotel Le Meridien. Both offer luxury rooms and services. Hotel Kempinski is more of a modern hotel while Hotel Le Meridien is slightly more elegant. Both have had several famous hotel guests, ranging from pop stars to presidents.

The Hotel Zara is also situated in the new part of the pedestrian street, in a small silent street. The hotel is located only a few steps away from the Danube, very close to the main tourist attractions, to the Central Market and to the favorite shops, restaurants, coffee shops, discos and bars. Both the building and the rooms offer a total comfort and they have been built in the modern and elegant style of the international boutique-hotels.
